Zeitoun Apparitions — Luminous Figure Above Church (1968-1971)
From April 1968 to 1971, a luminous figure appeared repeatedly above the dome of the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary in Zeitoun, a suburb of Cairo. The figure was witnessed by an estimated 250,000 to over 1 million people over the course of 2-3 years, including Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Coptic and Catholic church officials, Muslim witnesses, police, and journalists. The apparition would appear as pure light — sometimes sitting or standing atop the dome for hours, sometimes moving between the church's towers, accompanied by luminous bird-like forms and bright flashes. It was photographed extensively; some photos show a clearly defined glowing humanoid figure on the church dome. The Egyptian government officially confirmed the phenomenon. The Coptic Orthodox Church declared it an authentic apparition of the Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church acknowledged the events. What makes Zeitoun significant for UAP research is the same framework Jacques Vallee applies to Fatima: a luminous aerial phenomenon witnessed by massive crowds, exhibiting characteristics consistent with UAP (self-luminous, silent, hovering for extended periods, appearing and disappearing without physical mechanism), interpreted through a religious lens because the observers were in a religious context. If the same phenomenon appeared over a military base, it would be classified as a UAP. The Zeitoun apparitions are among the most witnessed and well-documented anomalous events of the 20th century.
