Lakenheath-Bentwaters Radar-Visual — The Condon Report's 'Most Puzzling Case' (1956)

On the night of August 13-14, 1956, a series of UAP were detected by multiple independent radar systems and visually observed by military personnel at two RAF bases in Suffolk, England — Lakenheath and Bentwaters. The events spanned several hours and involved at least five separate radar systems. THE RADAR EVIDENCE: The object was tracked simultaneously by: Bentwaters GCA (Ground Controlled Approach) radar, Lakenheath RATCC (Radar Air Traffic Control Center), a third ground radar, and the airborne radar of a de Havilland Venom night fighter scrambled to intercept. The object displayed speeds estimated between 2,000 and 4,000 mph, made instantaneous stops from high speed, executed sharp right-angle turns, and at one point reversed direction and began following the pursuing fighter — the pursuer became the pursued. THE PILOT ENCOUNTER: The Venom pilot obtained radar lock on the target, but the object maneuvered behind his aircraft and maintained position on his tail despite evasive maneuvers. A second Venom was scrambled but experienced mechanical failure before reaching the area. THE CONDON REPORT ASSESSMENT: The University of Colorado's Condon Committee — the study specifically funded by the Air Force to debunk UAP — examined this case in detail. Their conclusion: 'In summary, this is the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual files. The apparently rational, intelligent behavior of the UFO suggests a mechanical device of unknown origin as the most probable explanation.' This is the Condon Report — the study designed to close the book on UAP — calling it a probable mechanical device of unknown origin. Five independent radar systems, visual confirmation, a fighter pilot who gained and then lost radar lock as the object outmaneuvered him — and the government's own debunking study couldn't explain it.
